The young adult ministry at Sandia Pres creates connections
that allow us to experience God and to invite others into that experience, too.
This ministry and community provides young adults the chance to pursue God in the company of friends

Who are young adults?
Young adults are those of us in that early-adult stage of establishing lives of independence
(post-college, not under parents’ roof anymore, single, marriage, divorced, etc.).
We’re in our 20s and 30s and are all navigating one set of adult transitions or another
(career changes, moves, early parenting, etc.).

If this description strikes a chord with you in some way, come join us!

Regular Fellowship Opportunities

Sunday Morning Class
YA Sunday School, 9:30 a.m. in Room 221: A Fresh Look at Faith. We all have images in our minds - some accurate, some not - of Jesus. But what picture do the original stories paint? Whether you consider yourself familiar with Jesus or are happy to admit you aren't, come and take a fresh look that's bound to change your perspective. And regardless of the class topic, Sunday school has been a great place to connect and meet new young adults, so come join us!

This Week’s Topic:  Is there really anything more to “Easter” than Cadbury eggs and Hallmark cards? Come discuss and see the first Easter with fresh eyes!

Building Friendship -- Small Groups
I don't know about you, but my schedule is pretty full. Pretty specific. Pretty hard to change. Yet I'm always eager for time with friends. At Sandia Pres, "covenant" small groups are groups of friends that meet regularly, basically for deepening friendships and learning more about God together. I (Matt) can help you get one started very easily, so if you crave this kind of consistent friendship, contact Matt!

A Word for the Week…

mp3 for the Week

21"But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” - Luke 15:20b (what a father says to his profligate, renegade younger son)
31"'My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours.'” - Luke 15:31 (what the same father says to his jealous, embittered older son)

Why write something in here when I could just recommend some great tunes to you??

This Sunday, our guest preacher is preaching on the Parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:32). Which of the father’s words (above) do you need to hear this week? Check out “Return to Me” by a Boston band, Maeve at last.fm: http://www.last.fm/music/Maeve/_/Return+to+Me?autostart.

FYI - Another YA in the Pulpit!
Caitlin Deyerle is a student at Austin Seminary in her 20’s who grew up at SPC. She’s visiting us this weekend to lead worship. Come support her and hear her preach!

A Different Way of Doing “Worship”
Do the phrases “experiencing God” or “worshipful” not really ring true for you? Do you like your sleep on Sunday mornings too much to get to church?Do you just like things that are different and outside-the-box?

If you nodded at any of these, come to a new 5:00 pm Sunday service at Sandia. It will run until the end of March, so if you’re intrigued, come see what it’s all about.Child care available, too!

Sunrise Service on Easter  – 6:30am in SPC Outdoor ‘Chapel’
Our own Chad Huntley (youth director) will be leading an Easter sunrise service this year. I don’t like the sound of “6:30am” any more than you, but then I imagine the sun coming up over the Sandias, some great acoustic music, and some energetic youth leading us in worship… how cool! See you then!

Finding Other YAs on Sunday Morning
Ever walk into church on Sunday AM and wonder where all the young adults are? Or maybe you don’t attend services at all… Well, would it help to know that you can find us YAs in the same place every week?

Diana and I typically attend the 10:45 service and often sit with other YA friends. If you would enjoy worship more by sitting with peers and friends, here’s where we’ll be at 10:45 every week: when you enter the sanctuary, we’ll be in the far back-right wing.

(NOTE: The purpose of this is NOT to form a clique, but simply to provide a visible, consistent connection point with YAs at Sunday morning worship.)

Do Your Part
We all know the shyness and hesitation of being new. Especially in church. Especially in a church where people our age aren't as visible. You'll help each other and new people feel welcome, and you never know who you'll meet.

Eager for More?
Are you around at the occasional YA event, but are not finding the kind of connection you hoped for? Eager for more? Get in touch with me (Matt) – I’d love to listen! I have a lot of different ideas that don’t get advertised in the YA weekly, so let’s talk.

Sandia Pres in Transition - We Have a Pastor!
We have a transitional pastor! Last week our committee brought in Rev. Rick Hull for interviews and off-site preaching. Everyone was so delighted with Rick, and he with Sandia, that our Session offered Rick a contract, and he accepted. Information on Rick’s background may be found under "More Information" on the main newsletter page. Rick and his wife Barbara will be introduced to the congregation on Palm Sunday, and he will preach on Easter. Welcome, Rick!

Quick Questions

Do You Like Cooking? Want to Help?
There have been a couple announcements of new births of Sandia Pres families in the past week, and it got me thinking about meals for these two growing families. Diana and I both love to cook, and it's an easy way to care for and reach out in a way that is *super* helpful for new parents.

Are you someone who would enjoy preparing a meal to help care for one of these families? Some of us YAs are young parents, too, so we can appreciate how much it helps. But even for us without kids, do you enjoy cooking, and would you enjoy being part of such a joyful AND practical ministry?

If you're interested in cooking a meal, reply to me at mattp@sandiapres.org. From there, we can coordinate some young adult outreach to these excited yet exhausted new parents!  And if you're willing to cook but don't know what to make, I have numerous super-easy recipes that we can suggest and share with you.

Thanks,
Matt

March Madness Pool – Do You Want In?
In a few short weeks, we’ll get a YA March Madness pool going. If you want to get in on the action, e-mail Matt now to join! Just so we're clear--this isn't a betting pool, and no money will be exchanged or won. it's just for fun, and maybe the prestige of being a good guesser. Still working out details, but we might have optional contributions of whatever amount, to be used to buy basketballs for needy kids. Suggestions?

Are you a softball fanatic?
Or are you a volleyball fanatic?
Would you love to be on a team with some other friends and peers playing either one of these sports? If so, drop Matt an e-mail… With enough interest, there are a couple upcoming opportunities to make either one happen.

Help Save Paper and $$?
Do you currently receive newsletters via snail mail from SPC? If yes, would you be willing to receive something more concise via e-mail instead? Over a hundred people have signed up so far, but we need more like 500 people to make it cost-effective. If you’re willing to make the switch, click here to fill out the request form or e-mail Linda Hawleyspc_wm@sandiapres.org.

A Special Invitation
Some days it seems as if our generations (current young adults, 20's and 30's...) are often filled with a lot of similar questions about things like "religion," "faith," or "spirituality":

Does God exist?
If He does, does He even matter?
Why would God allow so much suffering?
Can the Bible be trusted?
Do the differences between religions really matter?
Isn't religion just full of hypocrites anyways?
What was Jesus himself like? He seems more interesting than the "Christians" I know!

Surely you have a few friends, neighbors, co-workers, or loved ones who resonate with this kind of questioning. Then again, maybe you are asking any of these questions yourself, too!

If any of this rings true for you, now's your chance to let me (Matt) know!

In the new year, we will be connecting people in small groups over a really neat video series called "Glad You Asked" (click to see website) that is incredibly thoughtful and conversation-provoking (just leave it to their British accents...) about these exact questions.

If anything above rings true, then please let me know! Don't worry about "when" and "where" just yet -- this is just to reply and tell me that "yes! That's me and my friends! We wonder those things!

Who wouldn't enjoy discussing these sometimes-touchy subjects with trusted friends over a cup of coffee? If that appeals to you, let me know now!
