This Week in Worship

On Sunday, August 1, we will conclude the sermon series on The Antidote for Anxiety: Three Prescriptions in Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. The message at all services will be “Trust the Master's Love,” based on Isaiah 12:2 and Matthew 6:24-34. We will share the sacrament of the Lord's Supper at all services. Please see "More Information" on this page for an overview of this series.

On August 8 Rev. Hull will begin a new summer/fall sermon series on This Call's for You!, with "Called to Life!" based on John 1:1-5, 1 John 1:1-4, Isaiah 53:4-6, and Galatians 2:20.

Contemplative Service

During summer the contemplative service will be held on the last Sunday each month, still at 5:00 p.m. with communion. The next service will be August 29.

New Sunday Schedule Coming

Our Session has decided to modify the Sunday morning schedule beginning August 29. This decision, the result of 2 years of analysis and discussions, was not undertaken lightly. The key goals are: 1) to increase the participation of children and youth in worship, 2) to offer Sunday classes to those who attend all worship services, and 3) to increase our opportunities to socialize and attend classes together as one congregation. All of us will be affected to some extent; we hope that all will embrace this change as one that will re-energize our entire congregation. Please see "More Information" on this page for a discussion of the particulars.

Resources for Growing in Faith

Cokesbury Booktable

Mary Seal stocks the booktable (really a portable cabinet) with a wonderful array of books--perfect for summer reading! Descriptions of some books that are currently in stock, and those that may be ordered quickly, are found under "More Information" on this page.

Travis Bauer's Teaching Links

Mars Hill Audio Journal

Mars Hill Audio Journal, a Christian interview program hosted by NPR veteran Ken Myers, explores "contemporary culture from the vantage point of Christian conviction." Published bi-monthly on CD or cassette, it makes a good driving companion. For more information visit http://www.marshillaudio.org.

"Pray for Our Enemies" Blogspot

Jesus stated in Mathew and Luke that we should pray for our enemies. One of SPC’s members, Henry “Mack” Davis, has felt considerable spiritual prodding in this area for some time and has set up a blogspot, http://prayforourenemies.blogspot.com, that has his initial thoughts on the subject and is beginning to draw outside participation. If you are interested in thinking about this challenging teaching, check out Mack's site.

Presbyterian Discussion Guides

Looking for an engaging, thoughtful, one-time discussion guide for your covenant group or Sunday school? Our denomination has put together an excellent online resource, packed with downloadable short-term (one or two session) discussions called The Thoughtful Christian. Each topic has a leader guide and a participant handout. They cost $5-10 each to download. If you see something you want to use for an SPC group, David Casson would be happy to download it for you. http://www.thethoughtfulchristian.com/New%20Site/main/Home.asp.
